Hosting and Domain renewals - don't wait til the last minute!

It’s common practise when you receive a bill - put it off until the due date comes around, and then pay it. The repercussion of not paying on time for services such as telephone or electricity is a late fee. But some bills, such as magazine subscriptions, club memberships and car registration, the repercussions of not paying on time are loss of privileges or service. Hosting and Domains also fall into this category.

With the recent demise of Distribute.IT it has highlighted the need to ensure that the renewal be processed before the due date - for a week they were unable to process domain name renewals and so for that week, many domain names expired, resulting in emails and websites not working for those owners. If those domain name renewals had been processed a week before the due date, there would have been no downtime at all.

There are other situations also where a renewal would not take effect immediately, for example some renewals require a person to process the renewal, and if requested on a weekend or late afternoon, it is likely that this won’t be completed until the next business day.

Remember that with hosting and domain renewals, the subscription date is extended, so you can even renew 3 months in advance and the yearly subscription would be due in 15 months time. This is great if the renewal falls on a date where you won’t be in a position to renew, for example if you are going on a holiday or a work trip. Also great if your hosting due date is different to the domain due date, you can process all in the one transaction.
